S&P 500

I invest $250 a week into the S&P500. Im 46 and plan on investing for the next 15 years. Is this ok ? Or should I be investing in Australian shares ? Any ideas would be great. Thanks. It’s just for an extra boost for retirement.

Hi Michelle.

We can’t tell you what you should be investing in, but your plan sounds like sensible to me. It also depends what other assets you own, such as a home or investment properties, and how your super fund might be invested. This gives you a full picture of how your total wealth is spread across different things.

Many people like to invest in both US/International and Aussie shares, because both options have some differences that the other doesn’t have. The Australian share market produces higher dividends plus franking credits, compared with US shares. Aussie shares are also weighted towards different sectors compared to the US, especially mining which is a unique strength for Australia.

So, it’s generally not a ‘one or the other’ scenario, many people do both, but there’s also no right answer. The key is to save and invest on a regular basis into low cost diversified funds, which you’re doing :)
